What Kind of Rat is That?

These are the colors, patterns, & coat types we are currently working with at Rocky Point Rattery. There are many other colors and coat types.

The coat is to be short, smooth, and glossy with the males having somewhat longer and coarser hair.

The coat is to be evenly curled and also to a lesser extent on the belly. Curly whiskers are normal for Rex.

D'Argent/Silvermane

Can have a very short, curly coat, "peach fuzz", or be mostly hairless.

D'Argent or Silvermane coats are a result of the tips of the hair shafts being hollow, giving the rat a silvered appearance. D'Argent/Silvermanes have very soft coats.

Velveteens have very thick, soft coats and can look like a poor Rex. They have wavy whiskers versus the curly whiskers of a Rex.

Siamese Berkshire Hairless Standard male rat

Hairless rats should have a thin, bright,  rather translucent skin, free of scars or pimples, and be as hairless as possible. The ears should be very large and wrinkle free. The whiskers may be very  short or missing; they are usually curly.

Agouti Irish Standard Male Rat

The color is to be a rich chestnut with dark slate at the base of the hair. Coat is evenly ticked with black guard hairs. Belly color on Self will be silver gray. Eye color is black.

Silver Fawn Self Standard Female Rat

Color to be a rich orange fawn, evenly ticked with silver guard hairs. Belly color on Self will be white. The definition between top color and white belly to be sharp and clear cut, devoid of  brindling. Eyes red.

American Blue Agouti

Fawn Berkshire Standard female rat

Color is a rich, golden orange, as deep as possible. Belly color will be of a slightly  lighter shade. Eye color is dark ruby.

Blue Agouti Berkshire Dumbo Male Rat

Color is to be medium slate at the base of the hair with a yellow-tan band on top. Coat is evenly ticked with blue guard hairs. Belly color on Self will be silver blue. Eye color is black.

Color is dark steel blue at the base of the hair with a fawn band on top. Coat is evenly ticked with dark blue guard hairs. Belly color will be silvery blue. Eye color is black.

Cinnamon Berkshire Dumbo female rat

Color is similar to Agouti, except the color is a warm russet brown, with medium slate at the base of the hair. Coat is evenly ticked with chocolate. Belly color to be as in Agouti, but of a lighter shade. Eye color is ruby or black.

Color to be a pale apricot, evenly ticked with silver guard hairs. Undercoat to be ice blue down to the skin. In Self belly color to be a pale cream. Eyes red.

Albino Dumbo Female Rat

 Color is a pure clean white, free from ivory, cream, or beige tint. Eye color is red.

Some light heathering to be expected. Fur on the face to be lighter on the whisker bed, over the eyes and behind the ears. Eyes red.

Rats to have a  solid undercolor with silver-white tips to the hairs giving an overall heavily silvered look. Rats will also have a facial mask (darker muzzle and eye area). Coat to have a soft, silky feel with a sheen. Eye color black.

 Color to be an evenly warm beige, with no suggestion of dullness or grayness. Eyes red.

Color is to be a slate blue, as dark as possible, showing no brown patches or silvering. Eye color is dark ruby or black.

Russian Blue Berkshire Standard female rat

Color to be similar to the blue mice or blue cats, a very dark slate blue color with dark ticking throughout. Eyes black.

To be an even mid gray-brown devoid of dinginess, silvering or patches, and having a distinct bluish sheen.  Eye color is ruby or black.

Color to be an off white with a cool ice-blue cast, not to be  confused with Beige or Champagne. Eye color is red.

Body color to be similar in shade to an HB lead pencil, some fading to be expected in an adult. Some light heathering to be expected. Fur on the face to be lighter on the whisker bed, over the eyes and behind the ears. Eyes red.

Colored top with a completely white  belly and white feet and tail.

The sides, legs, and feet are white with color covering the head, neck,  and shoulders and extending down the spine.

Markings like Hooded, but without the spine marking.


(Eira is technically a Mismarked Bareback since she has a small spot on her back.)

Similar to Hooded rats but instead of a spine marking, will have patches and flecks of color on the back side. The head and shoulders to be solid like those of a Hooded rat with a white spot/star on the forehead which should be centrally placed

 White equilateral triangle on chest with front feet white  and back feet white to half their length.

White marking only on the belly, with four white feet and a white tail tip.

White triangle as in the English Irish, in addition to the Irish belly marking and white tail tip.

Spotted Tabby

Markings/pattern which consists of a dorsal stripe and spots on the sides and face. The color of the dorsal stripe/spots is the base color, i.e. a Black  Spotted Tabby has black stripe/spots and the gene dilutes the body color making a gray background.

Body color to be medium beige, gradually and evenly shaded over saddle and hindquarters towards the  belly, being darkest at the base of the tail. Points on nose, ears, feet, tail, and tail root. Eyes red or black.

Body color to be white, free from stains and even throughout. The points to be a rich dark sepia (as dark as possible). Points are less prominent than Siamese. Eyes red.

The splashes should be numerous and ragged in outline, but approximately equal in size, and well distributed over the entire body.
